Mining operators are examining ways to reduce diesel dependence without replacing every machine in an existing fleet. For operations with serviceable equipment, mine equipment retrofits offer an alternative route to electrification by modifying selected electrical components, introducing trolley-assist systems or replacing diesel propulsion with battery-electric powertrains. The suitability of each approach depends on the machine’s condition, operating cycle, remaining service life and access to electrical infrastructure. Retrofitting is not automatically less expensive than buying new equipment, but it broadens the options available to operators managing established fleets.

Existing Assets Create Another Route to Electrification

The case for mine equipment retrofits begins with the value of existing machinery. Where the chassis, structural components and running gear remain suitable, operators may be able to retain parts of the original machine while upgrading its propulsion or electrical systems. This can extend the usefulness of an asset without requiring a complete replacement, although the economics depend on how much of the original equipment can be retained.

Several approaches are available. Electrical component upgrades can modernise existing drive systems, while hybridisation adds electrical capabilities to an existing propulsion arrangement. Trolley assist allows compatible diesel-electric haul trucks to draw power from overhead lines along selected routes. Full battery-electric conversions replace diesel propulsion with batteries, electric motors and associated control systems.

A documented example comes from Tรผrkiye, where ABB and Nuh Cement converted a Euclid R85B haul truck from diesel to battery-electric propulsion. The project retained the existing truck platform while introducing a traction battery, electric motor, vehicle-control electronics, thermal management and charging infrastructure. ABB estimated that the converted truck could save approximately 100,000 litres of diesel annually and avoid 245 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. These figures are supplier-reported estimates for that particular installation, not universal retrofit outcomes.

Retrofit Approaches Depend on Equipment Requirements

  • Electrical upgrades: Modernise selected components while retaining compatible parts of the existing drivetrain.
  • Hybridisation and trolley assist: Reduce diesel dependence under suitable operating conditions without necessarily eliminating diesel use.
  • Battery-electric conversion: Replace diesel propulsion while accounting for battery capacity, charging requirements, vehicle mass and thermal management.
  • Asset suitability: Assess structural condition, remaining service life and compatibility before committing to conversion.

Technical Compatibility Determines Retrofit Feasibility

Selecting among mine equipment retrofits requires an assessment of the original machine and the operating demands it must continue to meet. Retaining a chassis does not guarantee that the converted vehicle will preserve its former payload, range or maintenance profile. New batteries and electrical components can change vehicle mass, thermal requirements and component packaging, while control systems must work reliably with the retained equipment.

Commercial developments illustrate the range of possible approaches. In January 2026, International Mining reported that Inner Mongolia North Hauler had delivered three battery-electric retrofit versions of its 55-tonne-class TR60 dump truck to customers. The conversion retained the original structural and bearing systems while changing the power system. This establishes progress towards customer deliveries, but it does not by itself demonstrate long-term reliability or widespread fleet adoption.

Trolley assist presents a different technical proposition. Komatsu’s case study at Copper Mountain Mine in Canada describes seven haul trucks fitted with pantographs and other modifications for trolley-assisted uphill travel. During a three-month tracking period, the mine recorded 15,363 loaded ascents using the system. The example shows how electrification can target a specific part of the duty cycle rather than convert an entire vehicle to battery power.

Operators assessing battery-electric haulage trials can use such evidence to distinguish between a technically completed conversion and proven performance under sustained operating conditions.

Infrastructure and Downtime Shape the Business Case

The financial case for mine equipment retrofits must account for the infrastructure and downtime introduced by the conversion. Battery-electric machines require suitable charging arrangements and sufficient electrical capacity. Trolley-assist systems need compatible routes, overhead power lines and supporting electrical infrastructure. Both approaches require maintenance planning that covers the new electrical systems alongside the components retained from the original machine.

The conversion process can also remove equipment from service during dismantling, installation, commissioning and validation. Scheduling this work alongside planned maintenance or other operational changes may help manage disruption, but the actual downtime depends on the machine and scope of modification.

  • Infrastructure expenditure: Include chargers, transformers, cables, power connections or trolley installations where required.
  • Production availability: Account for conversion downtime, charging schedules and equipment reliability.
  • Maintenance requirements: Evaluate the new powertrain alongside retained mechanical systems.
  • Lifecycle comparison: Compare continued diesel operation, conversion and new equipment acquisition using consistent assumptions about useful life, energy costs and productivity.

Asset-Specific Decisions Will Shape Retrofit Adoption

Mine equipment retrofits expand the ways mining operators can approach electrification, but their value depends on the condition of existing assets and the requirements of the operating environment. Completed conversions and trolley-assist installations demonstrate that different pathways are possible, while early commercial deliveries indicate that some conversion programmes are progressing beyond development.

The investment decision must still account for technical compatibility, power infrastructure, downtime, maintenance and the remaining service life of the machine.

  • Asset condition: Determine whether the existing platform can support the intended operating life.
  • Infrastructure readiness: Match the conversion to available power and site operating conditions.
  • Evidence-based economics: Validate costs and performance against the mine’s own operating baseline.

Mining Frontier believes that retrofitting should therefore be treated as one option within a wider fleet strategy, not a universal substitute for new electric equipment. Its strongest applications will be those where retaining existing components and changing the power system offers a credible operational and financial case.
