Caterpillar will develop, test, and produce Cat® “zero-emission machines” for Nouveau Monde’s Matawinie graphite mining project in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Québec, Canada.

According to the agreement inked between the parties, Caterpillar will become the exclusive supplier of an all-electric mining fleet for deployment at the mine by 2028.

Nouveau Monde Graphite (CVE: NOU) aims to develop Matawinie as an integrated and green source of high-quality, carbon-neutral battery anode material for the lithium-ion and fuel cell markets. The mine already has access to clean and attractively priced hydroelectricity, making it easier to achieve the goal of a mining site that is fully powered by zero carbon footprint, renewable energy.

The company is targeting commercial operations by 2023.

Arne H Frandsen, Chairman of Nouveau Monde said the agreement with Caterpillar marked an important moment for its vision of a green mine in Quebec operated with zero-emission machines.

Eric Desaulniers, Founder, President and CEO of Nouveau Monde said the Matawinie project’s cutting-edge technological collaboration with Caterpillar could serve as a springboard for the future of the mining industry.
