The World Gold Council (WGC) and the Government of Ghana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an ASGM partnership aimed at supporting the formalization of the country’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. The collaboration seeks to strengthen responsible mining practices, improve gold traceability and encourage greater participation in formal markets.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to advancing sustainable gold production while supporting livelihoods within Ghana’s artisanal mining industry.
ASGM Partnership Focuses on Responsible Mining
The ASGM partnership will promote responsible sourcing practices and strengthen governance across Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector. Through the collaboration, the World Gold Council and the Ghanaian government intend to improve transparency within gold supply chains while encouraging environmental and social best practices.
The initiative also supports efforts to integrate more artisanal miners into the formal economy through improved compliance and responsible production standards.

Under the agreement, the partners will work together to develop programmes that strengthen institutional capacity and encourage responsible mining practices. The ASGM partnership is designed to support the formalization of artisanal mining activities while improving market access and reinforcing confidence in responsibly produced Ghanaian gold.
