Jellinbah Resources has awarded a $250m contract to Thiess to operate the company’s Jellinbah Plains’ coal mine in Central Queensland.

Effective from 1 January 2015, the 39-month agreement will start once the existing contract with Leighton Contractors ends.

Thiess managing director Bruce Munro said: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with Jellinbah Group and to continue our focus on bringing cost efficiencies and innovation to the mine site.

“This contract win demonstrates that there are still strong opportunities for clients and their partners to deliver exceptional value in the coal mining industry.”

Operational since 1989, the Jellinbah open pit mine is part of the Jellinbah East coal mining project located near Blackwater in Central Queensland.

Leighton Holdings executive chairman and CEO Marcelino Fernández Verdes said: “This contract illustrates how the Leighton Group can leverage its scale as the world’s largest mining contractor to deliver value to our clients.”

Thiess is the mining division of Leighton Holdings, parent company to international contractor Leighton Holdings Group.
