Komatsu has announced a strategic autonomous mining equipment partnership with AIM Intelligent Machines, a Perth-based technology firm, to bring fully autonomous operation to dozers and excavators across mining sites. The collaboration aims to integrate AIM’s artificial intelligence and machine learning platform into Komatsu’s earthmoving machinery, marking a significant expansion of autonomous capabilities beyond haul trucks into broader fleet categories.
AI-Driven Autonomy for Dozers and Excavators
The autonomous mining equipment partnership centres on deploying AIM’s proprietary technology stack, which uses advanced perception systems, real-time decision-making algorithms and AI-driven mining automation to enable Komatsu dozers and excavators to operate without human input in the cab. AIM Intelligent Machines has developed its platform specifically for harsh mining environments, where dust, vibration and variable terrain present considerable challenges for sensor-based autonomy.
Under the agreement, Komatsu will work with AIM to validate and commercialise autonomous solutions initially targeting dozer and excavator applications.
