Komatsu South Africa has announced that it has become the first surface Trackless Mobile Machinery original equipment manufacturer to achieve Technology Readiness Level 4 certification. The TRL4 certification was awarded following independent testing conducted by the University of Pretoria, confirming the effectiveness of its collision prevention technology on surface mining equipment.
The certification validates that Komatsu machinery fitted with Collision Prevention Systems and Collision Warning Devices can automatically inhibit propulsion or apply brakes when an imminent collision hazard is detected. This development represents a significant step forward for mining safety technology across the South African surface mining sector.
Komatsu Achieves TRL4 Collision Prevention Certification
The TRL4 certification positions Komatsu South Africa as the first surface trackless mobile machinery OEM to reach this level of verified collision prevention technology performance. The certification was carried out under the Minerals Council South Africa Mine Occupational Safety and Health framework, commonly known as MOSH, which sets out standards and protocols for occupational health and safety improvements across the mining industry.
The tested systems comply with ISO 21815 standards, which govern earth-moving machinery and their collision warning and prevention systems. By meeting these requirements, Komatsu South Africa has demonstrated that its collision prevention systems perform reliably under verified testing conditions relevant to real mining operations.
Independent Testing Supports Mining Safety Technology
The independent verification work was carried out by the University of Pretoria. Testing took place in multiple stages, beginning with controlled laboratory testing and progressing to light-vehicle testing at the Gerotek Test Facilities in West Pretoria. The process then advanced to controlled testing at a mining customer site, allowing the collision prevention technology to be evaluated under operational conditions closer to real-world surface mining environments.
This multi-stage testing approach ensured that both the Collision Prevention Systems and the Collision Warning Devices were assessed rigorously across different scenarios. The results confirmed that the machinery could detect imminent collision hazards and respond by automatically inhibiting propulsion or applying braking action, meeting the performance thresholds required for TRL4 certification.
Certification Provides Pathway to Level 9
The TRL4 certification achieved by Komatsu South Africa is described as providing a pathway toward Level 9 collision prevention, which represents a more advanced stage of vehicle intervention capability for surface mining equipment. It is important to note that TRL4 certification is not the same as completed Level 9 deployment. Rather, it confirms that the collision prevention technology has reached a verified stage of readiness that supports progress toward higher levels of autonomous mining safety.
Other companies active in collision prevention systems for the mining sector include Hexagon Mining and Mine Safe Global, both of which have been involved in similar technology development efforts. However, Komatsu South Africa’s announcement centres on its position as the first surface trackless mobile machinery OEM to receive this level of independent certification.
The achievement underlines the growing focus within the South African mining industry on adopting verified mining safety technology to reduce the risk of vehicle-related incidents on surface mining operations and to advance the broader adoption of safer, more autonomous mining practices.
