US metallurgical coal producer Alpha Natural Resources will cut 412 jobs prior to the sale of its Pennsylvania operations to Rosebud Mining.

In October, Rosebud Mining agreed to acquire central Pennsylvania-based Amfire Mining from Alpha Natural Resources for $86m.

Rosebud Mining will take over Amfire’s five deep mines and five surface mines, which are spread across seven counties, and the company’s four processing plants.

The mines have produced around 1.7 million tonnes of coal, including 1.2 million tonnes of metallurgical coal in September.

Rosebud operates more than 30 mines in Pennsylvania and Ohio, US, reports The Bradford Era.

The transaction is scheduled to be completed on 29 December, or within two weeks of the date.

In August, Alpha declared the plan to close its Emerald Mine near Waynesburg by the end of 2015.

Alpha Natural Resources is metallurgical coal supplier that operates throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Wyoming, with approximately 150 active mines and 26 coal preparation plants.
